As this new year gets started it is time to get caught up on some of our grant items.
Wednesday - September 23
RCEST PLC Strategies Session
Mark your calendar and be ready for a day filled with learning and sharing. I have lots of materials to pass out to each of you that I have been getting in over the summer. I would like for each of you to plan to bring an idea to share with the group as well (10-15 minutes).
Bring completed Substitute Reimbursement form

CAST - November 12-14, 2015 in Fort Worth
I have created a google doc (link will be in the email) to capture travel information for CAST. Please sign up for a room and let me know if you would be willing to be a driver. The grant will reimburse you for your registration, travel, hotel and meals. Your district will need to cover the cost of the substitute for Thursday and Friday.
Mentoring
I need each of you to go into the Data Center and update your information. You will need to know how many total students you teach and their ethnicity groups to complete this information. This is also where you will be able to add your cadre teachers (the teachers you are mentoring). All of this information has to be updated each year before our first report to count you in the grant. Link to enter data.
Here is the form to log mentoring hours. I would go ahead and get each of your teachers to sign their form. As you meet with the teachers you can add the information to the form and then turn in the first 6 hours in December and the remaining 6 hours by May. You do not have to meet with each teacher individually for 12 hours. You could meet with three teachers at the same time and count that time on each teachers log sheet. Completing this mentoring component also gives you 12 hours of the 100 hours you are required to complete before July 2016.

Rocket Boys Book Study
I have been receiving lots of ideas of how you are planning on using this book to jump start an activity in your classrooms. To receive credit for the book study. I need you to send me information stating which part of the book you are focusing on and how you are going to use it with your students. Please also include the actual lesson idea. You may email me the information.

Save the date - August 4-5, 2015 will be the Panhandle Math and Science Conference to be held at WTAMU. We had our first planning meeting today and the committee is excited to hear that the RCEST and RCEMT teachers want to have a leadership role in the development of this conference. We decided on a theme of INNOVATE CREATE MOTIVATE so that we can go ahead and create save the date cards and start marketing. We hope to have 500 math and science teachers at the conference. Please share this date with your administration so that they can plan for their math and science teachers to attend/present at this conference.

This week I got to attend two days of Leadership Coaching for High Performance training. One idea that we looked at was presuming positive intent and using positive presuppositions.
By paying attention to the presuppositions that we use and choosing our words with care, we can more positively influence the thinking and feelings of others with whom we are communicating.
An example - Have you done your homework? (This assumes that there is a chance the homework has not been completed.)
Asking this question with a positive presupposition might look like this:
Think about the questions that you ask and determine how you can change them to have a positive presupposition that presumes positive intent.
Another example that was given was when the husband of one of our presenters saw turnip greens at the grocery store and brought a bunch home. She was thinking, "What the heck were you planning to put with those for supper?" and what she actually said was "You have the start of a really great dinner!".
Thanks for everyone who has registered for CAST and sent in your invoices this week. Having paperwork in a timely manner makes my job much easier. I am looking forward to seeing the rest of them in my inbox when I complete everyone's travel on Monday. (Did you catch the positive presupposition?) Last weeks action items are at the bottom of the page for those of you who will be completing them this weekend.
Thanks,
Michele

An example - Have you done your homework? (This assumes that there is a chance the homework has not been completed.)
Asking this question with a positive presupposition might look like this:
- What did you do first on your homework?
- What did you learn by doing your homework?
- What questions came up when doing your homework?
- Who if anyone helped you with your homework?
- Where did you complete your homework?
- Which assignment did you find most helpful when doing your homework?
- What do you want to bring up with your teacher tomorrow about your homework?
Think about the questions that you ask and determine how you can change them to have a positive presupposition that presumes positive intent.

Friday 8.29.2014 - Action Items below.
As the first week of school is coming to a close, I hope that each of you have had a great start to the school year and can enjoy some rest and recuperation over the long weekend. This week has had my family attending soccer practices, private music lessons, the first football game, and a cross country meet tomorrow.

This week has had my family attending soccer practices, private music lessons, the first football game, and a cross country meet tomorrow.
As I work to develop my own communication skills, I am committing to sending out regular updates to the group.
If you have information that you would like to have shared with everyone please send it to me. Perhaps you have tried something new in the classroom that would benefit others, or one of the programs you work with might have received some honors that we can help celebrate, or maybe you have a personal victory that you would like to share. I would also love to share pictures of artifacts showcasing student learning.
Action Items for Next Week (Please complete by Sept. 5):
Click this link and update your profile in the Data Center (Must be completed before I can add your summer sessions.)
Register for CAST by clicking this link.
Mentor Forms need to be completed and turned in.
Mentoring Log Sheet
Please respond to my email to let me know that you received it. I want to make sure that my email group is working.
Thanks!
Michele

- You will be asked to add classroom student counts. This is a total count of all the students you teach for each demographic.
- You will also be asked to provide consent for participation in a research study. If you choose yes, you will be eligible for a $100 gift card. The research study is looking at all of the data for all of the teachers participating in the TRC for the state. Teacher names will NOT be connected with data in any reports. If you choose no, you will still be participating in the grant but the TRC will not use your data in the study. You will still be responsible for completing the pre/post test and providing STAAR data since that is a grant requirement.
Register for CAST by clicking this link.
- Remember to send me a copy of your invoice so that you can be reimbursed after attendance.
Mentor Forms need to be completed and turned in.
- The grant requires that you work with at least three teachers in your district for 6 hours in the fall and 6 in the spring. Each of these teachers needs to fill out the data form so that I can add them to the Data Center. (They also need to sign the log sheet.) Please scan and send as an attachment or mail them to me. You received these at the summer institute and if you need more copies they are found in the Paperwork tab under RCEST INFORMATION at the top of the page.
Mentoring Log Sheet
- As you work with your fellow teachers, log the time on the mentoring log sheet. You will turn in a copy of this before Christmas and again in May showing a total of 12 hours by the end of the year. You received these at the summer institute and if you need more copies they are found in the Paperwork tab under RCEST INFORMATION at the top of the page.
Please respond to my email to let me know that you received it. I want to make sure that my email group is working.
Thanks!
